When you mix hot water, baking soda, and salt with aluminum foil, a cool science trick called electrolysis comes into play. The aluminum acts as a sacrificial anode, meaning it gives up electrons more easily than silver. As a result, the aluminum oxidizes, releasing electrons.

These electrons then flow through the silver, reducing silver ions back to silver. It’s like a tiny electric current cleaning the silver by reversing the tarnishing process. How to clean silver at home & science

 

Materials Needed:

1. Aluminum foil
2. Baking soda
3. Salt
4. Boiling water
5. A glass or plastic container
6. Tongs or a fork
7. Soft cloth or towel

Procedure:

1. Line Container with Aluminum Foil:
   • Line the bottom of the container with a layer of aluminum foil, shiny side up. Ensure the container is large enough to submerge the silver items you want to clean.
2. Add Baking Soda and Salt:
   • Sprinkle baking soda and salt over the aluminum foil. Use approximately 1-2 tablespoons of baking soda and 1-2 teaspoons of salt.
3. Boil Water:
   • Bring water to a boil. The amount of water depends on the size of your container and the quantity of silver you are cleaning.
4. Submerge Silver:
   • Place the silver items on the aluminum foil, ensuring they touch the foil. Pour the boiling water into the container, fully submerging the silver.
5. Let It Soak:
   • Allow the silver to soak for a few minutes. You should start seeing tarnish transferring from the silver to the aluminum foil.
6. Use Tongs to Remove:
   • Use tongs or a fork to carefully remove the silver items from the hot water. Be cautious as the items will be hot.
7. Rinse and Dry:
   • Rinse the silver under cool water to remove any remaining cleaning agents. Dry the silver with a soft cloth or towel.

Explanation: This method takes advantage of a chemical reaction known as ion exchange. Tarnish on silver is caused by the silver reacting with sulfur compounds in the air to form silver sulfide. The aluminum foil, baking soda, and salt create a solution that helps reverse this reaction. As the tarnish transfers from the silver to the aluminum foil, the silver is cleaned.

Note: This method is suitable for solid silver items but may not be suitable for silver-plated items or those with intricate patterns or gemstones. Additionally, always take proper safety precautions when working with boiling water.
